Posted by Food Promotions On Monday, September 06, 2010 2 comments
Located along Weld Quay opposite the jetty, Siong Ho Fish Head Bee Hoon & Porridge is a busy shop where most of the locals will all like to have their meal.

From their earlier success in the main shop, located at CF Food Court the owner has now re-open another branch to accommodate for more customers at Hualy Food Court, just few shops away from the main shop.

The thing that we like about this place is for the reasonable price paid, Siong Ho serve both the noodles or porridge with the choice of seafood in a huge portion. For small eaters, you can share out one bowl of noodles or porridge.

From all the dish that we had, Food Promotions pick of the day would be Clear Soup Fried Fish Bee Hoon followed by the Frog Porridge. The soup is sweet and flavoring, it makes you crave for it.

On another note, Siong Ho is opening another third new branch at Johor in early September 2010. So do try it out Johor readers and tell us if you like it.

Posted by Food Promotions On Wednesday, March 31, 2010 0 comments
A lot of the Penangnites love spicy food, and are always looking for tasty Mee Goreng or fried noodles. For us, we have explored a few and will present to you our top 5 favourite Mee Goreng in Penang.

Take note that all of them are quite spicy and do remind the seller if you prefer it to be less spicy. Or you can also ask them to add "cabai" (chili paste) for hotter and spicier mee goreng.

1. Mee Sotong Goreng @ Padang Kota Lama

Hameed 'Pata' Special Mee Sotong Goreng has been famous since long ago. This halal Mee Goreng is special for it's generous amount of sweet sotong. Usually it is served at an average amount of wet and dry.

Along Penang road, opposite of Komtar Penang, there is this small traditional coffee shop which is famous for its' home made Durian Ice Cream.

For ice cream lovers, especially Durian ice cream, it is not easy to find it. Other than New Zealand Natural which have the official Durian Flo, we can't really find anything else closer until we went to Kek Seng coffee shop.

Penang Sky Hotel Best Char Siu rice

Posted by Food Promotions On Sunday, November 22, 2009 0 comments
Char Siu fan 叉烧饭 or known as the Chinese barbecued meat rice can be found at Chulia Street in Penang.

If you have heard of the famous Malacca Char Siu fan that is only available during midnight, this stall Wai Kee located at the ground floor of Sky Hotel on Chulia Street has the comparable tasty and crispy baked Char Siu, exactly like the ones in Malacca.

My personal choice is ordering in an individual plate because I like the gravy that comes together with the char siu and rice, but some other friends prefer individual servings of the char siu and other choice of meat.

After 30 minutes of waiting, our lunch is served. To avoid disappointment, do drop by earlier because the char siu is always selling fast.

Their char siu is unalike the ones we usually had, meat with some reddish color in the outer layer. It is crispy and crunchy, while give the sweet taste of the barbecued meat. From what we heard, their char siu is barbecued with coconut shells. That's why the sweetness and crispness. Must try!

Besides Char Siu, they also have other assorted roast meat such as Siu Yok 烧肉, Siu Cheong 腊肠 and also steamed chicken or roast duck meat.

To balance up the meal, Wai Kee also serve a type of vegetable, which is the Yau Choy Sum 油菜心. I had this vegetable many times and it always tasted fresh.

And finally, the typical Chinese meal comes with a bowl of soup. Wai Kee will serve the soup of the day and it varies among Sai Yeong Choi - Watercress soup, Pork Belly soup, or even the Leng Ngao - Lotus root soup.

Total lunch spent, RM 41.60 for 7 persons. The price would be around RM 5 to RM 10, depending on the dishes ordered.
