It has been almost a year since our last visit at Terrace Bay Restaurant, Copthorne Orchid Hotel, Penang. Since May 2011, Terrace Bay Restaurant come up with another interesting buffet theme, this time the restaurant is having the great Nyonya Buffet Dinner.

Bee Won Korean Food 30% Promotional Review

The name of Bee Won means 'Secret Garden' in Korean word. Indeed it is a little authentic secret garden hidden at Royal Hotel Penang.

We learn about the 30% lunch menu promotion at Bee Won and went straight away to try out the food. There are lots of variety to choose from the menu.

On top of the 30% on going promotions, they do have Lunch Special Promotion, that is available from 12.30pm till 2.30pm (Daily) from only RM 18.90+ and together with 3 side dishes and free juice. The best thing is that the Lunch Special is entitled for 30% discount on June 2011 too!

In any Korean dining, firstly you will be served with lots of side dishes. Those side dishes are called 'ban chan'. The most common and not to be miss side dish would be Kimchi. Usually you will be serve around 6-7 kinds of side dishes. We were served with seasoned spinach, cockles, slices white carrots, eggplant, potatoes and pumpkin.

[Invited]Weissbräu German Bistro & Bar Launching of New Menu's Party

Weissbräu German Bistro & Bar at Straits Quay, Penang, launched its new menu to a group of invited bloggers, media, patrons and a star-studded group of friends on last Friday night, 20th May 2011.

The overview of the Al Fresco Dining

On this special night, we were delighted to savor the food sampling of the new menu items prepared by Chef Pascal. For Korean Born Pascal Schnyder, he is well-known as the "Executive Chef Level" for a select range of restaurants. For instant, Chef Pascal created the initial menu for Weissbräu and has been actively involved in the restaurants evolution, both in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Besides, Chef Pascal has been trying for months revitalising Weissbräu's menu in order to create new dishes which can reflect the fusion of cultures, ingredients and cooking styles.

Food Sampling

New specialities on the menu include a selection of homemade fresh and smoked sausages, Hungarian Beef Goulash, new variations on Schnitzel, whole baked spring chicken, and salmon or red schnapper in Riesling wine cream, amongst a new selection of sandwiches and Bavarian burgers.

Besides the tasty food, there were free flow of beers for the honoured guests. The list of beers available at Weissbräu includes Erdinger, Hoegaarden, Franziskaner and Leffe Blonde are available on tap while imported bottled beer such as Lowenbrau, Becks, Konid Ludwig, Grolsch are served chilled. The usual one includes Carlsberg, Tuborg and Royal Stout. Weissbräu also offers a good range of spirits, liqueurs and wine.

On top of the food sampling, specially hired Malaysia band, Mad Sally lightened up the night with their songs comprise of Jazz, Pop, party tunes and a well-known chinese song "Ai De Jiu Shi Ni" 爱的就是你 by Wang Lee Hom. This live band comprises of five members, is led by Charles Yew Han Baker from British and Chinese-Malaysian Heritage. While the band was said to be an all male musical band, they do have a great female vocal, Lakshmi Appadorai, who would once in a while perform along with the band upon the crowd's request.

The Merlin's Cure Spa Treatment, Danai Spa Review

In the month of March and April, Danai Spa has its promotion on Merlin's Cure Spa Treatment where they use natural herbals and remedies as a moment of 'escape' to rest, reflect and energize. It was inspired by The Golden Age of Celtic Chivalry; where the renowned wizard Merlin from King Arthur's court was wise in his way about herbal and natural remedies.

Danai is a place for a different culture and tradition to inspire your healing nature. It was a pleasure to be invited by Danai Spa for an escapade into these Celtic stories with its Celtic treatments of tinctures, elixirs, poultices and salves soothe your frazzled soul.

Danai Spa at Eastin Hotel Penang is located at the 2nd Floor of the Hotel. Parking is available inside the hotel parking bay.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the friendly staffs at the counter and be served with a cup of hot ginger tea at the lounged area. A therapist will be assigned to each individual customer.

Guests will be required to change into the slipper provided and proceed to foot wash area. The spa session starts off with foot reflexology, where they will cleanse and massage your feet and leg. You will feel ticklish for the first time.

The opposite of the room is the area for manicure and pedicure. Besides this, Danai also provide facial services apart from spas and treatments.

There are four single rooms and three couple rooms and only two rooms has an attached bathrooms in it. If you would like to have some privacy, you may go for the single room.

Each massage room has a name for it. We were guided into a couple room (Passion) with an attached bathroom and jacuzzi. Indeed with the name given to its room; it was lighted dimly with aroma candles and few orchids petal on the jacuzzi tub around the sink area. You can smell the relaxing aromatherapy around the room together with a gentle music been played at the back ground.

Guest will begin with the massage session. For this treatment is emphasis on the Hot Celtic River Stones. The Celtic river stones will be steeped in the boiling mineral spring water, then placed on to various sites of the body to heat-release muscle tension, soothe and relieve pain.

Beewax oil will be used to massage on your body by the therapist follow by light stroke of massage using the smaller heated stone. The massage technique is excellent with moderate strength. You may request for light, moderate or strong strength in your massage depending on your personal preference.

After the massage, is the body scrub session. Guest will be given the Celtic Sea Salt Scrub throughout the whole body. Followed by the Herbal Salve Wrap that is a skin detoxifying herbal salve; applied to the body and been wrapped up for 10 minutes before been scrubbed off to reveal baby soft and glowing skin.

To end the spa session, guest will have a light massage on the face and scalp before heading to the bathroom for a good warm bath.

Overall, the whole spa session is very relaxing and rejuvenating. You will leave home feeling refresh and smells good on your smooth skin. It’s a great experience that would take you away for a moment from your busy daily life and it’s worth it to pay for such experience and services provided.

In conjunction with the anniversary celebration in March, Sigi's offer diners an exclusive anniversary set menu daily from 1st to 31st March 2011, except for Thursday and Sunday. The set meal offers a selection of appetizers, main courses and desserts consisting of best-selling and selected new dish. Weissbräu German Bistro & Bar Invited Review

Weissbräu German Bistro & Bar situated at North Block of newly opened Straits Quay, Penang, had just started its operation for 3 months. The branch which is in Kuala Lumpur is situated at ‘Connection’ level of Pavilion.

The word Weissbräu is a combination of German word ‘Weiss’ for white and bräu for brew, which refers to as white brew or white beer (Most popular and common beer in Germany). Weissbräu Penang German Bistro & Bar seats around 70 people indoor and 100 people at Alfresco. Reservation is recommended especially for dinner hour and weekends.

This restaurant was designed in a simple yet modern style with some wooden seating areas and bar concept. This creates the coziness of the ambiance.

This restaurant serves wide selection of German cuisine like pork specialties, sausages, pizzas, roesti, and imported draught & bottled beers.

Last weekend, we were invited to Weissbräu German Bistro & Bar for food tasting together with the other food bloggers. Appointing Wayne Yoon to head this outlet, we were honored to savor their newly German culinary creations.

Here are some of the culinary creations which we have tasted.

From the range of Hearty meal, Crispy German Pork Knuckle RM48++
with side dish of Roesti and Sauerkraut

According to Wayne, the knuckle will be pickled for 2 or 3 days and this consequently creating minimal amount of fats in the pork. It is cooked with beef stock and red wine sauce. The tenderness of the texture of the meat is nice when it is eaten together with the Sauerkraut (Shredded Cabbage in white wine vinegar) which consists of mild acidity. Apart from this, the Roesti which was served together with this meal tasted quite nice to our palates. The Roesti is actually a Swiss German part signature which is made from shredded Potato strips pan-fried in clarified butter.

As Germany borders countries are France, Switzerland and Belgium, some of its influences are seen in the menu too, such as Pissaladière the popular pizza from Southern France. It is a thin crust dough topped with sour cream, roasted onion, anchovies and olives, quickly baked in oven.

Butter Swiss Roesti (Traditional Swiss Potato Dish) with egg, pork bacon & cheese RM24.00++
The specialty of this Roesti is that you can add the toppings that you like at different prices. The basic roesti starts at Rm 13.80++

Classic Caesar RM16.80++
Crisp head lettuce comprises of their homemade mayonnaise, tomatoes, and croutons topped with parmesan cheese. Salad may be add on with Light Curried Chicken @ RM 6.00++ or Smoked Salmon @ RM8++.

A lightly smoked giant sausage made from selected cuts of beef and pork, mixed with our own special blend of spices chili.

The sausages were meaty, juicy, and very flavorful. As for the Garlic Mashed potato, it was quite rich and creamy with a fluffy texture.

Customers are free to choose either 1 side dish or 1 vegetable or even a choice of two side dish or vegetables on top of the main course/hearty meal.

• Vegetable: Buttered Market Vegetables or Sauerkraut

According to Wayne, Weissbräu German Bistro & Bar will launch the remodeled menu soon and we were lucky to savor the newly created dishes. Price are still unavailable at the moment.

(Chili pork sausage, Herbs Pork Sausage and Garlic Peppercorn Pork Sausage)

The Homemade herb(Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme and Basil) sausages are smoked for 4 hours before they are ready to be served. They are new items and are currently off the ala-carte menu but is available upon request.

For desserts, we are served with 2 types of desserts, Apple Strudel and Chocolate Mousse. The homemade fillings of the Apple Strudder perfectly suit our taste buds for it is not too sweet and a bit sourly. It is served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Whereas, Chocolate Mousse is rich with the chocolate flavor that melts in the mouth.

Rainforest Bakery, The Organic Bakery

We are delighted to be invited to our all time favourite bakery shop, Rainforest Bakery last weekend to have some insight on this family run business and the bakery's wide spread of organic breads. Twin brothers Jesse and Jerry, and their parents started the bakery first outlet at Chulia Street back in 2001 and there are now 2 more outlets in Sungai Ara and Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

The trade secret of their organic breads? Jesse spent years to learn the art of making pastries, when he toured Europe, working and spending time in as many different types of bakeries as he could in countries like France, Germany, Italy and etc.

Rainforest Bakery then have a motto of baking natural and original breads. By saying original, it does not mean only the ingredients are organic, even the preparation and baking process must be organic in every way and that is what sets them apart from the rest. They don’t use enhancers, preservatives, improvers or conditioners in every single products offered.

We were brought in to their kitchen where Jesse introduced us to the making of sour dough bread. It takes a few days to produce a sour dough bread as this type of bread do not go through the normal process of using cultured yeasts but with the reserved dough.

Next up, we had something cheesy and new in the bakery, the Parmesan Biscuit. This biscuit is full of cheese flavor. Paired with one dip of pumpkin soup, and it will taste sweet yet cheesy at the same time.

Then Jesse prepared Bagel for us with cream cheese filling and some with cream cheese and smoked salmon. The bagels best eaten after toasting for a few minutes tasted totally delicious and filling, you will definitely crave for more!

Breads from Rainforest has no preservative, thus can only last for a maximum of 3 days. If you want to keep it longer, store it in the freezer to lock the moisture. There are so much more organic breads in the bakery, so do check it out and start a healthy living!

Fresh 鲜茶工坊 Fruit Tea Experts Review

Located at one of the shop lots at Gat Lebuh Macallum, Fresh 鲜茶工坊 is a café specializes in Taiwan cuisine, Japanese cuisine, local delights, beverages and special fruit tea from Taiwan.

Last weekend, we were invited to Fresh 鲜茶工坊 for a introductory write up. This shop had just started its operation for 4 months.

During the conversation with one of the pleasant worker, we got to know that the franchiser’s wife is a Taiwanese. Most of the materials used as well as the ingredients like the pearls for the fruit tea were imported. There are two types of pearls, the black pearl and the white pearl. We were told that the black pearl can improve our skin complexion while the white pearl is good to keep our body temperature balance.

Dumplings

The signature dish – Okonomiyaki 大阪烧 RM9

It may consider as a simple dish but it consists of fresh octopus, cabbages, and slices of pork which is wrapped up nicely by egg. The fillings are well-mixed with the special dressings from Japan. However, for small eaters, it is recommended to share this dish with more friends because of the huge portion.

D' Food Garden has made it's mark in Penang for 2 years. This restaurant is run by Mr. Lee and his wife Venus, the chef behind the scene.

Located the D' Piazza Mall, a commercial cum residential building near to PISA, the restaurant is themed with nice and comfortable cafe style restaurant. It is certainly a fine place for gatherings, meet-ups and get-together.

During our visit for lunch at D' Food garden, we are introduced to the Value Set Meals that comes with a free drink and soup. Below are some of our favorite chef's recommendations.

This special sauce was an idea of Venus when she was residing at the western country. It was not easy to find our local chili for cooking, thus this homemade sauce was a mixture of ketchup with a hint of spiciness.

Usually, we will only get a dory fish when it comes to a fish fillet. What's good here is that, D' Food Garden Fish Fillet is cod fish and it is fresh from the market daily.

Value Set Lunch comes with a free drink and soup. The home-cooked soup is delicious.

Apart from the set meal, we ordered noodles from the ala-carte menu.

Vintage Bulgaria Restaurant & Bar ran by a Bulgarian family set foot in Penang island since 2008. This restaurant is famous for its authentic Bulgarian food, namely the grilled or pan-fried meats with rich spices and herbs, and a healthy amount of salads.

The restaurant reflects a typical Bulgarian theme and layout where there is a lower level dining area which has a great setting for romantic dinner with the area being separated into cosy nooks, quaint wooden windows accented with lace curtains and fireplace and cosy wooden bar for drinking session. While on the upper floor, it has a function room suitable for private functions and group celebrations.

It was our first time dining in this restaurant and it left us with a very good impression of the ambient. Let's take a look at the food served during our food review session.

Our favourite will goes to Bulgarian Platter, the classic mixed grill of homemade kebapche, kyofte, Karnatche (pork and beef spiced sausage) and succulent pork fillet. Four types of different servings of pork and beef; all homemade by the secret recipe of the Bulgarian family, is full of flavors.

It was a great Italian dining experience for the floggers, when we are invited to Bravo Italiana, the Italy themed restaurant with nice interior designed to suit the food served.

The food, earnestly prepared by Mr. Lim with his years of working experience in Italy was a bonus as we get to try out the authenticity of Italian food.

The outdoor barbecue pit at Sigi's Bar & Grill on the beach is now operating!

Designed to provide diners a great spot to relax on the beach and enjoy the sunset, diners can also enjoy feasting on freshly barbecued delights.

The circular seating around the barbecue pit can fit in up to 12 guests is an ideal venue for small group get-together during special occasion such as personal or work related celebrations.

Diners can choose from two special set menu priced at RM90++ and RM120++ per person with a minimum order of four. Not to worry, both menu provide a balance mix of seafood, red and white meats, complete with a selection of starters and appetisers, bread and desserts, including free-flowing beer, house wine, virgin mojitos and soft drinks.

During our exclusive dining experience on Thursday evening, we have Chef John Brock in action demonstrating his grilling skills. It was our pleasure to try out the wide variety and scrumptious grilled items from the menu.

Whilst the meats sizzle on the BBQ, we start enjoying items like boiled prawns, fresh oysters, salads, and bread.

We could not believe our eyes when we saw the scrumptious spread at Copthorne Hotel Genuinely Thai Buffet when it only cost you at RM30 nett per pax!

It was our great pleasure that Sally and Siva, the team from Copthorne Hotel whom hosted us and a team of floggers a Thai Buffet dinner at Terrace Bay Restaurant. This buffet which is only available on Saturday dinner and Sunday lunch are presented by Chef Chamnan Ngamlamai who flew all the way from Bangkok to lead the kitchen and come out with a list of Thai dishes.

Next is the Phad Thai or our local Fried Koay Teow. It's not often we find good Halal Penang Fried Koay Teow. You can personalize you Fried Koay Teow, by telling the cook at the live cooking station of which ingredient you would like to add or reduce. The koay teow is not too soggy and the mix of soya sauce, garlic and other ingredients are perfectly balanced.

Sigi's Bar & Grill was filled with excitement last Friday when they heat up the Batu Feringgi Beach with a theme beach party, Latino Fiesta!

Guests not only Penangites but from different corners around the world came in with colorful beach casuals, all dressed up to party!!!

The night was hosted by an entertaining and witty MC.

Along with sizzling Salsa and Latin pop rhythms by a 12-piece live band, entertaining masquerade performers, and Salsa & Samba dancers.

There were fire acrobatics performance and theater magic.

And activities like birthday celebrations, and Latin dance competition.

Executive Sous Chef John Brock, came out with Latin-themed dishes which suits the theme party, namely the Brazilian BBQ and South American specialties with Jalapeno Minute Steaks, Chicken and Beef Churrasco, Lamb Belly Tamales, Lime Chicken Empanadas and many more live cooking action stations.

The Latino Fiesta was not only a great night with a wide variety of food, but also a fun filled event. Towards the end of the night, party goers stands a chance to walk away with great hotel stay prizes generously sponsored by Golden Sands Resort during the lucky draw session.

Located along Weld Quay opposite the jetty, Siong Ho Fish Head Bee Hoon & Porridge is a busy shop where most of the locals will all like to have their meal.

From their earlier success in the main shop, located at CF Food Court the owner has now re-open another branch to accommodate for more customers at Hualy Food Court, just few shops away from the main shop.

The thing that we like about this place is for the reasonable price paid, Siong Ho serve both the noodles or porridge with the choice of seafood in a huge portion. For small eaters, you can share out one bowl of noodles or porridge.

From all the dish that we had, Food Promotions pick of the day would be Clear Soup Fried Fish Bee Hoon followed by the Frog Porridge. The soup is sweet and flavoring, it makes you crave for it.

It was a warm welcome by Caffe Strada when they invited all the bloggers to dine in their cafe. We are surprised by the banner that they have prepared and the effort they have put in to make it a pleasant night for us.

Strada by the meaning of street in Italian, is chosen as the name for the cafe is because they want to achieve the concept of street food and relaxing cafe where guests can enjoy spending quality time together with family or friends, enjoy watching football, and also enjoy the live singing while having some food and drinks.

Good news to all Penang Dim Sum enthusiast!

We have a new dim sum restaurant called Viva Dim Sum Delight 东城点心 which recently started their business on the 10th August 2010. Located next to Chinese Swimming Club in Tanjung Tokong and occupying a section in a food court called Viva, this dim sum tea house is operated daily from 6am to 2pm.

David and Dennis, the owner of this Viva Dim Sum Delight flew back two very talented chefs all the way from famous Dim Sum house in Kuala Lumpur to operate and lead Viva Dim Sum kitchen, and to come out with all the creative and delicious creation. Besides, the flour and some ingredients are imported from Hong Kong to provide fine texture and quality of their dim sum.

This Dim Sum Place is based on Ala-Carte ordering and freshly prepared from Monday to Friday. On busy weekends, Dim Sum will be prepared all the time and will be picked by the customers on a self-service basis.

Food Promotions pick of the day is the Steamed Bun with Butter Cream & Salted Egg Yolk 特制流沙包. It is stuffed with hot juicy butter cream and salted egg yolk that will flow as you take a bite on it. We would also recommend the Shanghainese Meat Dumpling 小笼包 or known as Xiao Long Bao. The Xiao Long Bao is wrapped 22 folds into perfection and the soup inside is steaming hot. Not only that, the sweet tasting soup is cooked with their secret recipe.

Our usual Malaysian habit is to Yum Cha either at the dawn of the day or late at night, but if you are looking for a place to Yum Cha in the bright sunny afternoon, this is the place we are going to share to you.

The Golden Sands Lobby Lounge and Garden Cafe is now having a ala carte Dim Sum Buffet from 12pm to 4pm daily.

Pay only at RM29.90++ for adults and RM15.00++ for children, you get to try all the best of Chef Tan's creation of steamed Dim Sum and deep fried Dim Sum. Up to to 30 choice to choose from, we had a great lazy Saturday afternoon relaxing at Golden Sands Lobby Lounge. Besides the comfortable sofa seats at Lobby Lounge, guest are also able to surf the net with the available free wi-fi from the hotel.

Moving on to Chef Adam's Signature Mains, where the wood-smoked dishes infused with aromatic flavours and delicious textures were introduced, we had the Wood Plank Roasted Fish and Quack, Quack... Quack.

You can choose from 3 types of fish, which are the Salmon, Wahoo or Black Cod. The fish is grilled and scented on a wood plank, roasted gazpacho dip, herbed potatoes, peppers and onions.

This unique duck dish is proportioned into three servings which comprises of smoke grilled duck liver, grilled duck breast and braised leg with dried fruit sauce and roasted garlic sweet potato mash.

Then from the Fire Grilled entrée menu, all grilled items are seasoned with 100% Natural Himalayan Pink Salt and Sarawak Black Peppercorns. For a complete healthy meal, the entrée is also accompanied by a serving of vegetable, potato and sauce of your choice.

Chicago Rib House, the restaurant that is famous for serving the Best Flame Grilled St Louis Pork Ribs, Steaks and Beef Ribs has finally set foot in the heart of Penang Island.

It is under the same umbrella group as Tony Romas in Malaysia. If you love Tony Romas, the ribs and steak at Chicago Rib House is equally good!

Looking into the interior of the restaurant, it has a dining hall and a bar in the right corner serving a wide range of imported beers.

We kick of our food review with the Cosmopolitan, a recommended cocktail from the manager.

You can find Cosmopolitan in the list of Martinis, Lemonade & Teas. It is classic Martini made with vodka, Cointreau and Cranberry juice.

Besides serving alcoholic drinks, they also provide alcohol-free mocktails for their guest.

That Little Wine Bar is a European style boutique wine bar and lounge located at Chow Thye Road. Since opened in December 2009, the bar has been offering its guests an uncomplicated experience to enjoy fine wine from its wide selection of Old World and New World labels, accompanied by delicious European-inspired soups, salads, sandwiches and tapas.

It's our pleasure to be invited by the owner, Chef Tommes and his wife, Louise to the restaurant and we really enjoyed the pleasant environment, the food as well as the wine. Entering to the restaurant, behind the main glass door is the warm and pleasant dining environment with dim yellow light and candle lights on the table accompanied by the soft English background music, which makes it a perfect place to enjoy and relax after a hectic day.

Besides the common dining area and the bar, there are 2 private dining rooms upstairs for larger group gathering, birthday celebration or company event that can accommodate up to 10 guests each. Both rooms are custom decorated, one with Chinese traditional dining concept, the Eastern Room while another one with simple and modern styles, the Western Room.

On top of that, the wine cellar is open to the guests as well, and you could have a small gathering with friends in the wine cellar while enjoying food and wine.

During our visit to That Little Wine Bar, we were pampered and introduced by Louise with Chef's specials and highly recommended food from the menu along with a bottle of white wine.

A popular bistro to hang out at night, they also serve western meals all day, everyday only at RM7.80!

Out of our interest, we went to check the food out during lunch. Claiming that without compromising on the quality of their food, in their specially best deal meal menu, they offer five choices dish and draught beer is also one of the beverage choice in the menu. It is served 7 days a week between 12 noon to 12 midnight.

Bangers 'N' Mash RM 7.80 nett

A traditional Home-made jumbo sausage, surrounded with creamy mashed potato, peas and tasty onion gravy. Not too heavy meal, the sausage tasted good.

SOHO Spaghetti RM 7.80 nett

Spaghetti the way British like it, with a little touch of Itallian. Served al dente with minced Chicken Bolognaise or Vegetable Napolitana Sauce. We had the Chicken Bolognaise, not much to our liking, but filling comparing to the rest of the dishes.

Homemade Burgers RM 7.80 nett

Soho has a wide range of homemade burgers that are served with chips and a crisp healthy side salad. Among the choices are; Minted Lamb Burger, Vegetable Garden Burger, 100% pure Beef Burger and Soho Chicken Burger.

We choose to have 100% pure Beef Burger. Original price at RM 11.00, now at RM 7.80, this is a burger classic from an authentic and original Soho recipe. One of our favorite among all dishes.

Roasted Herb Chicken RM 7.80 nett

A succulent roasted quarter chicken, served with lashings of creamy mashed potato or chips and smothered in Soho's special herb gravy. Not our favorite pick.

Traditional Shepherd's Pie RM 7.80 nett

A true classic British dish of tender minced meat in a secret highland sauce, covered with garden peas and a crisp green salad. Comes with a choice of chicken or lamb. We enjoyed the minced lamb.

The Golden Triangle Restaurant Eat All You Can Ala Carte Style

The Golden Triangle is famous for its status and pricy menu. During our recent visit, we wanted to order from the ala carte menu initially. But, we were more attracted to the “Eat & Drink All You Can” ala carte buffet menu, as shared by a Food Promotions' fan, Ah Kui previously. Finally, FoodPromotions team decided to try it out ourselves.

1. Mee Sotong Goreng @ Padang Kota Lama

Hameed 'Pata' Special Mee Sotong Goreng has been famous since long ago. This halal Mee Goreng is special for it's generous amount of sweet sotong. Usually it is served at an average amount of wet and dry.

When we first came to know about Kopi Cine from an online review, we thought it was a nice place to drop by. Kopi Cine is park under the same management as Bon Ton.

Kopi Cine comes from the word Kopi (coffee in Malay) and Cine, the short form of Cinema simply means a coffee shop where Asian movies are played every night.

Two months old up to date, this Kopi Cine is part of a row of heritage houses in Stewart Lane, Penang. To preserve this heritage house, this coffee shop is turned into an a vintage cafe decorated with antiques.

The fun part that also attracted us to visit this place, is the big piece of Mahjong paper with a glass of colorful crayons to set your imaginations to live. The Buncho crayons, bring back our nostalgic memories.

The food served was good and unique as well. It was originated from Australia with some touch of our local taste. Their food menu is divided into Breakfast (9am to Noon), Lunch (Noon to 4pm) and Tapas/Dinner/Sharing plates (6 to 10.30pm). They also served many types of drinks, cocktails and wine.

Replacing the former Sigi's by the Sea dining restaurant, Sigi's Bar & Grill includes a spacious, air-conditioned dining hall and a signature upper deck dining area with an amazing surrounding view of the beachfront and sea.

The priority of Sigi is to serve the freshest food in their remodeled menu that includes contemporary Western cuisines, local delights along with grilled specialties.

Appointing Executive Sous Chef, John Brock to head this new beach front restaurant, we were honored to savor their newly culinary creations.

The following are the culinary creations which we have tasted.

Crab Salad RM 34

Under the list of ‘Green Things’ by Sigi’s, there are extensive range of up to 10 salads which suit the vegetables-lovers’ taste bud. We had Crab Salad which includes a mixture of swimmer crab with salmon, cornichons, capers and shaved pumpernickel.

Salt and Pepper Calamari RM 21

Out of the list in ‘Light Things’ by Sigi’s, we ordered Chef Brock's recommendation, Salt and Pepper Calamari. The strips of calamari was well deep-fried and was nicely presented with the red chili, coriander, onion jam and nahm jim.

Kataifi Wrapped Prawns RM 28

This mouthwatering appetizer is nice when it was served hot. It consists of tiger prawns wrapped in kataifi pastry with aioli and gremolata.

Seared Scallops RM 30

We love the juicy scallops for its freshness and specialty. This appetizing dish was nicely balanced with the green olive tapenade, chive crème and potato galette.

Braised Oxtail Fettuccine RM34

If your are looking for a light meal, try Braised Oxtail Fettuccine from ‘Pastas’ by Sigi’s with a generous helping of parmesan, broccoli and basil.

Pan-fried Cod RM65

From the series of ‘Signature Dishes’ by Sigi’s, we had the Pan-fried Cod which was also highly recommended by the Chef Brock. This dish was presented on the crushed potatoes spread together with pistachio aioli, fennel and caper salad.

Stinco d’Agnello ala Peppino’s RM 62

The Stinco d’Agnello ala Peppino’s was made up of braised lamb shank with port wine and minced vegetables served with capellini pasta and shaved parmesan. This dish is really value for money as it was served in large portion.

From the ‘Sweet Things’ by Sigi’s, we enjoyed The Bombe mango sorbet served along with white chocolate parfait, Italian meringue and pine nuts. We enjoyed this dessert very much.

Each of us was delighted to taste out the Shortbread which was nicely stack with citrus cream and poached berries.

Besides to the food, the restaurant’s bar offers a wide selection of alcoholic to non-alcoholic beverages. The emphasis is on New World wines.

For those elderly or health conscious people, the restaurant actually provides the selection of healthy fruit juices healthy fresh juices and smoothies.

I like the tandoori chicken the most. Others, is just ordinary.

The waiters kept pushing us to order causing reverse effect. It would be better to recommend the best seller, to make the customers feel like wanting to try out more.

Value for money: 5/10
For current promotion, there is slight reduction of price and a complimentary drink.

OVERALL
I would recommend to try out the ala carte rather then the set meal.

[Invited Review] Sticks Fire Bistro: Hawaii in Penang

When asked why Jerry wanted to set up Sticks, his answer was "My challenge and vision is to create a beautiful place in Penang, that locals and tourists can be proud of without having to pay an arm and leg for".

If you have visited Sticks, you couldn't agree more with us that this place do have a postcard look. It is nicely renovated to have nice touch of Hawaii.

The Malaysia's 1st Fish Bar

Sticks is located outside Queensbay Mall where you can enjoy the sea breeze at night. Diners can choose between dining al-fresco or the air-conditioned area. It is undeniable that this place was set up with a lot of cost, but the price of the food was definitely affordable.

Last weekend, we are invited to try out their newly launched set meals. In Sticks, the concept is serving fusion food, so be ready to get the best of Local, Western, and a mixture of Japanese and Korean food.

Two of their signature drinks that we are introduced to were the Lemongrass and Tamarind. Both of these, RM 3.90 each can be only found in Sticks, a drink to quench your thirst in our Malaysian hot weather.

Tamarind with Longan RM 3.90

The homemade Tamarind drink is sour, sweet with a slight bitter after taste. Many customers and mostly girls like it.

Lemongrass RM 3.90

The Lemongrass on the other hand, is a mixture of lemongrass juice and tea, tasted very much like lemon tea, but with lemongrass instead of lemon.

Homemade Mushroom Soup RM 5.80

The mushroom soup is made with blended real mushroom and served together with freshly made croutons.

Besides serving food, the bistro is great for drink at night as well. It has been a month since Sticks started their operation here and we are impressed on the growth rate of this new bistro.

Kuala Gula is a fishing village located along the coast of Perak, approximately 50 km south west of Taiping. During my recent trip to Taiping we stopped by Kuala Gula for a seafood dinner at Restaurant Seafood Wan Ling.

This restaurant was recommended by a colleague of mine, saying that it was good because of the freshness of the food. If you notice the surrounding of this restaurant, it is indeed showing the view of a typical fishing village.

Min Jiang Coffee Shop is located nearby the cross road of Jalan Air Hitam and Jalan Sempadan or Jalan Kampung Melayu. Just a few shop from the Nissan showroom.

There are many hawker stalls group under this coffee shop. My favourite here is the fish noodle.

The Fish Noodle stall start business at 8pm till late night.

Restoran Law Chang Kee at Nibong Tebal

A recent road trip to Nibong Tebal, we stop by for dinner at Restoran Law Chang Kee. This restaurant is a Chinese restaurant specializing in old school Teochew cuisine.

Besides serving seafood or rice, they also offer another option, the porridge.

They do have dishes that you don't get to eat everyday like octopus tentacles and thorn snails. The dishes ordered are as follows:

In the nutshell, I would say the taste and price is pretty average. However, it could be better if the raw material on the day is fresher. IKEA is not just a place to shop for furnitures and accessories, but also a place we enjoy dining. IKEA Food restaurant is always full of people and the queue at the food counter is usually very long.

Smaklig Måltid - Bon appétit

One thing good is the fast moving queue which everyone will push a trolley that is 3 tiers tall, get some trays and cutleries, and start picking their choice of food.

The best seller signature dish that shouldn't be missed is the Swedish Meatballs.

Swedish Meatballs (10pcs) RM 10

Their meatballs is made from minced beef, served with cream sauce and lingonberry jam, with fries - a classic combination that sends you craving for more.

Next is the Chicken wings.

Chicken Wing (5pcs) RM 9

Hot, yummy juice oozing out with every bite. These wings are less oily and much healthier than the usual fried ones.

Herb Baked Salmon RM 15.90

The salmon meat wasn't really tasty, however for the price paid for this thick slice of Salmon, no complains.

This is our dessert with a small Swedish flag.

Daim Cake RM 4.90

If you know the Daim crunchy butter almond bar covered in milk chocolate, this cake is made from them. Delicious, thin and crunchy and served cold.

Their beverages are free flow, soft drinks at RM 1.50, while coffee/tea at RM 2.

Don't hold too much expectations for the word restaurant as it is more like a food court with ordinary ambiance and no serving waiters/waitresses, you have to wait for your own seats among the crowds and queue up for your own food. The concept is self service, nevertheless, the prices you pay for the quick bites and resting place you get, are definitely worth your time and money.

Black Canyon Restaurant introduced many new fusion food concepts, Black Canyon signature coffee and at the same time take great care in preparing the healthy and delicious food through use of herbs and spices, with no flavour enhancers.

There are quotes everywhere in the shop, on the wall, plate, menu and etc. It reminds me of my favourite quote by Mark Twain.

I like the fact that they use natural and authentic herbs and spices like peppercorns, sweet basil, lemongrass, kaffir lime and etc to enhance the taste.

Service: 7/10
Need to wait for a short while for the food to be stirred fried or cook upon order.

Value for money: 6.5/10
The Canyon Set A is value for money as you need to add only RM1.00 from the ala carte price for the Watermelon Juice. As for Canyon Set B is not worth to add RM3.00 for the mini tom yam soup.

OVERALL
The Canyon Set A is highly recommended if you choose to dine at Black Canyon Restaurant.

On the very same night as the our dinner there is also a wedding dinner. The overall setting for the wedding banquet.

Bean Sprout is served together with Braised Superior Shark’s Fin with Seafood.

I prefer eating it without the bean sprout.

After enjoying the crispy skin, the piglet chopped into pieces and then fried.

It is a long established restaurant, the building and interior is 'old'. You can make reservation for private room, there are karaoke system available.

Food Presentation: 5/10

Take the Steamed Pomfret as an example, a very simple garnishing of ginger and spring onion.

Portion:7/10
The portion is large. Everyone is very full and contented with the portion.

Taste: 6/10
I would rate is as normal or average, does not have its own unique taste.

Service: 7/10

The waitress did a good job reserving us, making sure the flow of drink is available at all time during the dinner.

Value for money: 5/10

RM638++ per table for 10 person. This price to pay is dear in comparison to the satisfaction we get.

OVERALL
In the nutshell, many agrees that the food taste averagely good.

Daorae Korean BBQ Giving a Korean Experience

Many of you have known about Daorae, the famous Korean BBQ restaurant. Daorae Korean BBQ has various outlets which include Subang USJ, Desa Sri Hartamas, Kota Damansara, Puchong, Kepong and 2 outlets as well in Penang.

The one we re-visit recently, is the outlet at Bayan Point, Penang. All of us really like Daorae, so continue reading to find out why.

The first reason we like Daorae is getting assortment of banchan or the side dishes. And it is refillable.

The one we always look forward to is Kimchi, which literally translated means to preserve. Kimchi is a traditional Korean pickled dish that is made of pickled vegetables (typically cabbage) in a spicy sauce.

The main dish that you should not miss to order here is the Korean BBQ. The minimum BBQ order is 2 BBQ dishes. From the menu, you can choose from traditional charcoal BBQ popular food among Korean which is the beef and pork.

In Korean BBQ, you have the stove right in the center of the table where the waiter would come around to help you barbecue the meat. Besides, they opted to use charcoal as the heating element compared to gas which is resulting in tastier barbecued meat.

Our way to eat Korean BBQ is the dipping the meat in the sesame oil sauce and special chili bean sauce, top with a garlic and Kimchi, wrap around with lettuce leaves and enjoy the juicy taste of the meat at one go!

Do not get panic if there are no more leaves as they will refill them as much as you want. Besides Korean BBQ, among the other dishes we ordered are as follow.

Korean glass noodles & rich pan fried with thin slices of marinates pork & assorted seasoned vegetables in a sesame oil sauce.

Kimchi Bibim Gooksoo RM17
A traditional Korean noodles with Kimchi & spicy chili sauce.

Soon-dubu-jjigae RM17
Soft tofu with fresh seafood simmered in a spicy broth, served with rice.

Dolsot-bibim-bab RM19
A rich layering of fresh and seasoned vegetables, served in steaming hot stone bowl over a bed of steamed rice topped with a fried egg. It served with Korean chili paste.

Kimchi-jeon-gol RM50 (S) RM70 (L)
A spicy combination of pork, kimchi, tofu and Korean noodles simmered in a rich kimchi soup served in a cast iron pot.

At the end of our meal, we are served with ginger soup dessert and watermelon.

Now comes to the second reason we choose Daorae. We are also served with many complimentary dishes, such as Kimchi pancake, fish and the steam egg.

And most importantly, the friendly service from the crew, and not forgetting the cute Korean Manager ;) Daorae is our recommended Korean restaurant which offers nice quality food with affordable price.

Kek Seng Coffee Shop Home Made Durian Ice Cream

Along Penang road, opposite of Komtar Penang, there is this small traditional coffee shop which is famous for its' home made Durian Ice Cream.

For ice cream lovers, especially Durian ice cream, it is not easy to find it. Other than New Zealand Natural which have the official Durian Flo, we can't really find anything else closer until we went to Kek Seng coffee shop.

Kek Seng Ice Kacang comes with a homemade colorful jelly, a scoop of Durian ice cream and another type of ice cream, sweet red beans, sweet corn and are covered with shaved ice, then laced with rose syrup, brown sugar syrup and condensed milk.

This sweet-tasting dessert is highly recommended and it is just perfect for the hot weather in Penang.

Besides, this coffee shop also offers other variety of hawker food such as chicken rice, koay teow thing, laksa, lobak and poh piah.

We have all heard of Smoky Jack for it's unique interior design and romantic expensive dinners, but have you wonder, how what's in there for lunch?

What surprise me is their interesting set lunches. We thought it is a very expensive and romantic dining place, but during lunch Smoky Jack's set lunch is as cheap as RM 15.80+ ! We had a great time dining there, so let's check it out.

There are few types of set lunch served; from as low as RM15.80+, RM18.80+, and some between RM23.80+ to RM28.80+

Smoky Jack's Set Lunch serves main course with fresh salad or soup of the day as starter and also the in house dessert. When we were there last week, we have a complimentary drink and garlic bread too.

Friulvini Verduzzo IGT RM55 per bottle

This first wine is Friulvini Verduzzo IGT, a white wine to start our buffet dinner. A delicate fruity aroma with pleasant, sweet and slightly acidulous that goes well with the appetizers.

Terranoble Sauvignon Blanc 2005 RM63 per bottle

Terranoble Sauvignon Blanc 2005 is a new world wine from Chile made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc (a type of white grape). This wine is very fresh, dry and well balanced with a nice natural acidity that ideal as an aperitif with seafood and fish. Terranoble Sauvignon Blanc is also Hardwicke House's house pop wine.

Schubert Hardwicke Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

Schubert is named after the founder Kai Schubert. This deeply colored red wine exhibits an intense nose of blackberries, plum and notes of dark chocolate. Full bodied and well structured and finish with a long, sweet and dark fruit fill. It is a compliment for Hardwicke House to get 'Hardwicke Reserve' printed on this wine's label.

For those who is concern on the HALAL issue, no worries it is guaranteed as the food is from halal suppliers and strictly no alcohol content in the food.

Sin Eng Heong Biscuit is one of the most famous Chinese biscuit shop located in Ipoh town.

During our previous road trip to Ipoh, we dropped by this shop to pack the puffs back to our hometown.

Long queue to tasty Kaya Puffs

On long weekends and holidays, where most food hunters will make a trip to Ipoh, the Kaya Puffs may run out fast, so it is recommended to make reservation earlier. Last weekend, we are limited to buy only 2 boxes of Kaya Puffs per person due to the long queue of customers.

From far, you can smell the aromatic flavor of the biscuits. Most of those biscuit would be sold out fast even before the seller have the time to pack them.

Selling at only RM0.70 per piece, the puff is packed with kaya fillings.

It is served hot, flaky and crispy with a nice aromatic small. Even after several hours, the crispiness is still there.
